David Wood Townsend was the son of Glenn Edward Townsend and Bertha A. (Towberman) Townsend. He married Lillian Francis Rennick on October 4, 1913 in Chicago, Cook county, Illinois. He had two children, Harriet L. (Townsend) Ayers and Edward Glenn Townsend. He moved from Denver, Colorado to Los Angeles county, California in 1926 and started work for Metro-Goldwyn-Mayer studios. During the filming of "Robin Hood of Eldorado," in 1935, he was killed when his car accidentally left the road at Sonora Pass and fell 200 feet.
